Product Metrics

"Your product has 2 million registered users. The CEO announces it at the all-hands. Investors are confident. Six months later, churn spikes, revenue misses forecast, and an analyst shows that only 80,000 of those users have ever logged in more than once. You were measuring the wrong thing and nobody caught it until it became expensive."

What is Product Metrics ?

A product metric is a defined, trackable number tied to a clear user goal, used to show whether your product is actually delivering value, not just a number that looks good on paper. Good metrics connect directly to user behavior, can warn you of problems early (leading metrics) or confirm what already happened (lagging metrics), and are defined clearly before tracking begins so they give an accurate picture rather than a misleading one.

Why does it matter?

Wrong metric

Teams optimise for what gets measured. A vanity metric rewires the entire team around the wrong goal and the damage compounds with every sprint.

Late signal

Lagging metrics confirm what already went wrong. PMs who track only revenue learn about problems months after they started, when the cost to fix them is highest.

Metric gaming

Without counter-metrics, teams optimise one number by breaking another. DAU rises because of aggressive notifications. Nobody notices until NPS collapses.

After this module you will be able to choose, define, and defend the right metrics . for any product. Build a metrics tree that makes every number actionable, diagnose why a metric dropped, and spot when a number is hiding more than it reveals.

Product Metrics for PMs Overview Video (6 mins)

Five concepts. One integrated metrics system. Learn about the following metric frameworks: AARRR, HEART, North Star, Leading vs Lagging and Cohort Analysis to understand what it is, when to use it, and how it connects to the others. This is a critical layer which is mostly skipped in many Product Metric resources!
